Introduction to Programming with Jini

This session introduces the key programming techniques and APIs that are provided by the Jini Network Technology. You will discover how to use the lookup service as a highly dynamic replacement for the rmiregistry, even in non-Jini applications, how to work with leases and distributed events. This session will also give an overview of the Service UI specification that allows a single service to provide different user interfaces as appropriate to the needs and capabilities of a particular client.

Java VM Internals and Performance Optimization

This session covers tips and tricks for improving both actual and perceived performance of Java applications. Additionally, the session examines the nature of a typical Java Virtual Machine from the perspective of how to get the best performance out of your applications.

Simon Roberts acquired twelve years experience as a software engineer in scientific and control systems fields, writing in a variety of assembly languages, C, Modula-2, and C++. In the evenings, he pursued a passion for teaching with local colleges and universities. In 1995, he joined Sun Educational Services as an instructor and course developer. He is also a team lead on the Java certification projects. He has recently developed courses on Jini, Jiro, and Java Architecture, and is currently working on internals and debugging courses. Simon is co-author, with Mark Cade, of Sun Certified Enterprise Architecture for J2EE Technology Study Guide, Prentice Hall 2002. Simon is co-author of The Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide with Philip Heller and Michael Ernest, and of The Java 2 Developer's Handbook with Philip Heller, both books published by Sybex.
