The Semantic Web — RDF, RDF Schema, and OWL (Part 1 of 2)

The Semantic Web — RDF, RDF Schema, and OWL (Part 2 of 2)

Learn more about the technologies underlying the Semantic Web and their current usage within open-source projects, commercial products, and industries.

Resource Description Framework (RDF) provides a lightweight general-purpose system to support the exchange of knowledge. Learn about the RDF specification, web services to exchange and query RDF, its relationship to UML, semantics, and current tools for composing and deploying RDF.

RDF Schema describes RDF vocabularies in a similar relationship as exists between XML and XML Schema. This session will cover the RDF Schema specification and some example ontologies. Web Ontology Language (OWL) builds upon RDF and RDF Schema and allows a greater vocabulary for properties and classes. Learn about the OWL specification, OWL editors, parsers, reasoners, as well as some ontologies built in OWL.

No knowledge of the Semantic web is assumed. Some knowledge of Python is recommended.
